As a self-taught beekeeper, building his knowledge from books, József Szilasi has been beekeeping for four decades in Budafok with a hundred and fifty hives. Due to limited local resources, he can produce only mixed flower honey and linden honey, which is why he migrates his bees. As his garden has limited space, he carries out honey extraction in a specially adapted truck. He sells his honey at a nearby farmers’ market on Saturdays and offers home delivery services as well.
József also values educational outreach. Within the framework of the “Mézes reggeli” (Honey Breakfast) program, he organizes honey tasting sessions for school children. Every November, he is invited into four to five schools, where he conducts small-group school presentations for eight to nine classes about pollinators and beekeeping.
